El misterioso lago de los huesos

0

Lake of bones
BY MIKI NIETO

Located in the Himalayas, in the state of Uttarakhand in India, there is a lake located 5000 meters high called Roopkund. Its geographical location would not attract more attention if it were not for the fact that in this lake every time there is a thaw period hundreds of bones of human bodies emerge to a large extent.

A long story.

It all started back in 1942 when the skeletons that lay under the ice began to be seen and, when it disappeared, they emerged to the surface.
You could think of climbers but nothing could be further from the truth. About 750 skeletons are said to have been found.
As a team from the prestigious National Geographic team managed to investigate. It was found that there were a large number of skeletons dating back to 800 AD.
At first, there was talk of a possible epidemic or even a hail storm since many skeletons were hit on the head by a round object.

Many theories

The tradition of the area tells that perhaps they are the remains of an Indian king with his wife and his entourage. They would have perished trying to cross the winding mountain range during a terrible storm.
There are also remains of bones from the 19th century. These are of Indian and Greek ethnicity and would not only correspond to the same era nor did they die at the same time. Some bodies date as we said from the 9th century and others from the 19th century.

The journal Nature, which has also been in charge of studying the subject, says that the skeletons do not appreciate the existence of some pathogen of bacterial origin, leaving the theory of the epidemic without weight.

According to another local legend, the goddess Nanda Devi, goddess of the mountain, beat the pilgrims who went to the mountain to her sanctuary, for her behavior that was not appropriate for her. This caused them to fall into the small lake of Roopkund.

A great enigma that of the lake of bones to which we must be attentive like that of the road of the same name
